The inner darkness is the embodiment of malicious intent, and now having a physical form can cause quite the series of unfortunate events.

Any way to externally restore the user? How does this affect the user if genjutsu is used?

welp if the inner darkness is in control it would have to switch back with the user, being if the user was incapacitated it is mainly used to defend himself. As with gen, the consciousnesses are switching so the user would be in the gen while the inner darkness isnt. Its not getting rid of the gen though. But any physical damage would still affect both being they are sharing the same body, just not one mind.

I mean, if the Inner Darkness is an innate thing of your clan that has no affect on your chakra, techniques and other factors that transcend simple interaction development then you don't necessarily need a technique to switch personalities.

but this will allow a full switch in control, not just personalities.
