Everything seemed rather bleak and destitute, but much else couldn't be said of a graveyard. Of all else, a graveyard in Otogakure no Sato. Of course, Chronus wasn't complaining. On the contrary, this was the place he needed to be for the night, because it was his duty to speak to the gravestones. He was never a disbeliever of the afterlife, because he saw the afterlife all of the time much to his chagrin. Helping the stuck souls move on was just as good as the job got. Nothing special, no fighting spirit monsters and the like. Just looking schizophrenic to the ordinary human for a few minutes and walk off like nothing ever went down. There was a time when Chronus thought that to be fun, but he got older, and he hated it like a house chore.

Sitting back against a tombstone, a cyan-colored object knocked him on the head. He got to his feet and rubbed his head, swearing. One other thing he had to worry about was being hit by a spirit that felt too high and mighty for him to assist. He didn't feel very up high to contend with the incompetence, so he took out a rolled blunt and lit it with a lighter. He looked at the spirit with his dull blue eyes, giving the signal to speak. It manifested into a somewhat beautiful woman. She would have been especially beautiful, if she didn't have a caved in face. It made Chronus remind himself he wanted to die looking good, because of all things, this was the kind of fate he was always trying to avoid.

Her name as Kikyo. Twenty-something years old, and was a priestess in her lifetime. However, she was doing all the things she was told would get her into hell. Needless to say much, a particular client grew attached to her and tried to kill another man she was lying with using a warhammer. She ended at that, because it didn't take much thinking to know what happened. She relented her whoring, and made several pledges to Chronus as he took another drag. He didn't have an interested air to him, but he was. Looking into his soul was something tricky, as most spirits would find. He gave the spirit priestess reassurance and a pledge to get her into the afterlife. Chronus would mean it, because a restless spirit became dangerous if left about to meander. Tedious was this task, but no one else was going to do it.

Maybe because no one else could do it...

Looking forward from atop the roof of a mausoleum was all Chronus could bring himself to do at the moment. All around him different manifestations of souls lingered alongside where they were put to rest. Some spirits ventured out to interact with other spirits, taking on their human looks although still phantasmal. Even pets manifested if their final circumstances permitted it. Souls were just as social as people were, the priests could account for that as much as Chronus could himself. He looked around and saw the parade before him, a strange event that he felt he should have known about.

However, he was here to settle Kikyo's case and go home. Parades were nice and all, but they didn't last forever. Vengeful spirits, on the other hand, had until the end of days to fuck over whatever they needed. Funny thing, with their longevity they should have all the patience in the world. Chronus learned a long time ago that, much to his chagrin, it was all a ruse to get people like him to do their shit.

"I need a new hobby," the young boy said as he leaped off of the mausoleum and onto a cross-shaped tombstone below. The guy buried underneath owed him a dollar when he was alive, and never made the payment back before a stray kunai got him in the temple. A damn shame, was all Chronus had told his friend before he moved on to the afterlife. Human spirits went up into the afterlife in such a goddamn hurry, the young boy learned early on. Animal spirits and other yōkai stayed back to linger on. At times, Chronus wondered why his clan was known to be Shinigami. Exorcisms were scarce at that. He likened himself to be a shaman.

He wasn't being paid to do this, so the time he spent self-reflecting would only amount his personal thoughts. That's all he did nowadays, self-reflecting. He wanted to get out of the village and see the world for a bit. Other spirits would be about, and it would be a refresher from seeing the old crew of the Otogakure Village Cemetery. The spirits there weren't necessarily a bad bunch, but it wasn't like people were dying all the time in the village. Chronus thought about deciding whether or not to retire the job for a few months and relax. He could, but he was tempted to just leave the village like he wanted to.

There was something awfully suspicious about the little girl that wandered about the mausoleums, especially the one where the man who killed Kikyo was laid to rest. There were souls abundant there until the child appeared. Now Chronus felt like he had a blind eye on the area. The little girl was no little girl, he would discover. She was a baku, a devourer of dreams, a spirit eater. Any spirit the basan ate was utterly annihilated and sent into ruin, which made them so destructive. Chronus didn't think this would be the day he'd have to give warning of a baku, but he was prepared for such an occasion. He stopped short a few meters from the girl, who was crouched on the floor, staring to the ground.

"Beat it brat," were his only words. Chronus wasn't a man of sweet-talk, but he wished he was when he saw the girl's reaction. Pulsing, radiating red eyes shone in his face and violent energy enveloped the girl. Chronus jumped back, but half-way into it he was hit mid air by a dark gray trunk. The boy crashed into a tombstone, the construct shattering under the force of impact. He lied on his back, groggy and aching as the basan gave a triumphant bellow. It's elephant-like form gave it size, and with its trunk it began to suck in souls left right and center. Chronus got to his feet, and unsheathed his katana. "I'm really beginning to hate my job," he muttered as he raced for the auspicious beast.

Chronus couldn't recall seeing the dark tendrils emerge out from the ground and entangle the Baku. The beast fought back, but there was something to the tendrils that seemed more like some sort of Sealing Technique. It did it's job well, and small fiery orbs seeped from the Baku's mouth and trunk, spilling everywhere like a turned-over flagon of wine. It struggled to keep in its food, but it slowly shrank and seeped into the earth with the tendrils that bound it. Chronus couldn't say he was relieved, but he wanted the opportunity to get back at the beast for giving him that hard hit. He was sore, but it'd be over after a while. With a katana still in grip he heard slow footsteps approach him from behind. He turned around and readied his blade to strike, and came to see something bizarre and... awkward, for a loss of words.

Dozens of eyes lay blinking at him from a crooked tree black as obsidian. The tree looked gnarly and quite forbidding, a half-rotted hempen noose tied to its most outwards branch. It swayed in a wind that wasn't there. Chronus assumed it was some sort of spirit that was attempting to gain corporeality, but upon further inspection it looked less scattered and more... uniform. He had to approach it, sadly, because if anything else happened with the spirits here Chronus would be getting a stern word from a very important... "patron". As he did a hand seemed to stem from the tree, skeletal and necrotic.

"You were ready to fight my pet, I see," said a cold, yet sweet female voice from the tree. An arm soon followed the hand and a body ultimately. She was a purple-skinned woman, voluptuous and sinister all the same. A strange dress with ornamentations, she donned, with her right breast out purposely. Her sharp orange eyes had a sort of fiery glow to them, and she smiled with all the Underworld's wickedness. "You're an interesting young man, Chronus."

"And you are...?" Chronus felt surprisingly... safe... with the woman's presence. It was a feeling like he felt around spirits. She just seemed... natural.

"I'm someone who's come to offer you a deal worth while," she said with a grin.

Nothing seemed natural about this woman. She had the feeling of a spirit, but was still attached to this plane. Chronus ruled out corporeality because she wasn't possessing a body. Possession signs were not visible, and the eyes were not outright glowing, nor were the general possession runes on the body. This woman looked more a nightmare than a real human. Was she even human? The young boy couldn't tell what this woman was, other than a woman. Yea, her feminine features were greatly pronounced, but it didn't get the sort of attention from Chronus than it would with an ordinary male. The boy was asexual and pretty contempt with it. Was this woman some she-devil come to change that? As if she read his mind the woman advanced slowly, seemingly dragging the very darkness of the area along with her towards him. He readied his sword, but the woman's hard gaze was set on his eyes, the side of her mouth curved in a sinister grin.

"Does my appearance scare you..." she said softly, laying a sharp nail on the side of his jaw. He bled a bit, but didn't wince. "Or does my appearance entice your carnal desires?" Chronus brought the edge of his katana against the woman's neck. Her cold orange glare against his pale blue cool stare made for quite a spectacle. Her presence seemed to make his soul feel edgy. He felt feral for some reason, ready to attack in a bloody frenzy if need be. What's with this woman's glare, he thought as his eyes began to glow cyan. His neon blue hair was really glowing now, along with his own body.

"Your looks mean not a thing to me. Remove your nail from my jaw and I won't slit your throat." The woman laughed, as her appearance slowly changed to something more... human. Apricot skin and ruby-red eyes, hair deep red and bright as fire. She stepped back, eyes kept on Chronus. He moved away his sword same time, but his spirit was still at unrest. A slight gust past between the two, the two colors of the two's spiritual aura clashing. Blue was clashing against red and for a minute it would seem the two were ready to tear each other apart. "I don't appreciate the stare woman."

It would seem at that instant bright neon blue-colored discharge appeared on his body and along his katana. Chronus didn't know it at first, but when he realized he didn't bother with it. It felt natural as anything he'd ever done before, but it was something new. He couldn't tell what it was about this encounter, but it brought out something new in him. The woman's red glare became horrific as she began to be enveloped in red and black discharge. She was doing the same thing, and whatever they were going to do, it seemed catastrophic.
