The Yūgure clan is a family with a history that is, ironically, drenched in darkness and conflict. The true origin of the clan is unknown, but the first members to possess the unique abilities arose in the crevices of Mizu no Kuni. The reputation of the Yūgure became tainted, and were feared and considered "demons", due to their malevolent and bloodthirsty nature, said to have the ability to erase entire villages from existence. However, during the early ages of the shinobi world, the Yūgure ancestors were said to be peaceful and individual, until one powerful man persuaded his clan that forming alliances were necessary to expansion and survival. The name of this legendary man is said to be Erebus Yūgure, sought to achieve his dream of participating in the soon-to-be-founded Mist Village, but unfortunately, his dream became clouded by malevolence and deceit, and the future of the Yūgure forever changed.
From the beginning of their travels throughout the Water Country, the Yūgure were praised and considered a powerful force, their prowess with the special abilities becoming both feared and envied, so much to the point that the leaders of other clans sought to unravel the secrets of their bloodline. The Yūgure eventually came to form their first alliance, and believed they were finally going to achieve their goals. Unbeknownst to the clan's leader at the time, Erebus, the allied clan didn't seek to cooperate with the Yūgure, but wanted to steal their special bloodline for themselves. This revelation came to light when a member of the Yūgure, Erebus's daughter, mysteriously disappeared, and was later discovered to have been murdered and experimented on by the allied clan. Enraged by this deceit and the death of his daughter, Erebus turned his back on the shinobi world, and declared this dream to be futile.
Guided by vengeance and a relentless anger, Erebus confronted the allied leader, and despite their plea, his rage was unforgiving, and proceeded to slaughter the entire clan himself. The dreams of the once-benevolent man became corrupted, and the Yūgure knew that as long as their powerful abilities existed, they would constantly be hunted and deceived. Just like the darkness that earned them their infamy, Erebus led the Yūgure to believe no one deserved existence except those of their own blood, and swore never to trust the idea of a treaty again. While the descendants of the Yūgure eventually branched out and journeyed to other lands, Erebus and their ancestors would forever be remembered as the reason for the Yūgure's infamous reputation of merciless slaughtering throughout the Water Country.
To this day, the truth from where the the Yūgure came or how they accessed their abilities remains to be a myth, but there are few that seem to hold merit. The most believed, praised and accepted even by the Yūgure descendants themselves, is that the darkness that they are able to conjure is summoned from an another dimension, a place said to be consumed by absolute darkness. Furthermore, despite this description, this dimension is also believed to be the home of a powerful race of creatures that either created and/or can manipulate the darkness like another limb. The manifestation of the darkness, and moreso the physical metamorphosis caused by one of the Yūgure's most powerful techniques, is believed to be influenced by these mythical creatures. While still feared and considered to be a deadly force, the members of the Yūgure are generally accepted to come in all shapes and forms, and have come a long way since their ancestor's own true "era of darkness".
