The training grounds of Konohagakure... Such a peaceful place to be, Yugo thought. Despite the sound of people kicking trees or the occasional gout of fire in the distance, this seemed to be a pretty peaceful place with the sunshine and the wind gently blowing leaves off the tree branches. Picking his spot underneath of a tree, Yugo sat cross legged and flipped his cloak out to avoid sitting on it and tightening it around his neck and shoulders. Taking a book out from under his arm, Yugo flipped to a page about midway through it that was titled "Chakra Natures and How to Discern Them: A Guide to Discovering Your Own Latent Abilities". Feeling pleasure with the feeling of a book and paper between his fingers, Yugo began to read quietly to himself under the shade of the tree and by the light of the noon sun.

First, to discern your own chakra type without the assistance of another more experienced shinobi near by, you need chakra paper. What this paper does is tell you what chakra nature you currently possess naturally, though this isn't a finite limit on what you can do. Many shinobi possess more than one nature, either by working hard to achieve that quality, being born naturally with it, or by a more taboo way in the form of an implantation of an organ or D.N.A into their bodily code. Simply touching the paper with a small amount of chakra will cause a reaction to occur that tells you what your elemental affinity is and those reactions are as follows: If the paper burns then your nature is Katon, if it becomes damp then Suiton is your element, if it rips in half then you are among the rare few who have Fuuton as their natural element, if the paper wrinkles then you are blessed with the power of Raiton, and if the paper crumbles away into dust then you have the affinity of Doton. Again, you must only send a very small amount of chakra into the paper to be able to tell what your elemental affinity is. Another way to either see what your affinity is or to gain a basic grasp of the element is to try to summon some forth.

Typical results of this kind of ancient method are hard to determine, though I will list a few off for convenience. If you wish to discover if you have Katon as your element, then placing your hand in a funnel shape over your mouth and expelling chakra will inform you if it is whether fire is created or not. For Suiton, simply send out a wave of chakra to a pool of water and see if you can form a sphere with it. For Fuuton, gather chakra into your palm (or fingertips if your chakra control is poor) and expel it at a target. If it shreds or cuts, then you will know. For Raiton, gather chakra into your fingertips and snap your fingers. If a spark is created then Raiton is your element. As for Doton, see if you can summon a small pillar by forcing chakra into the earth through your hand. If you can, then you'll know. Keep in mind, some people are very unlucky in that they're born with no elements and must work twice as hard to simply learn one element in their lifetime, let alone two.

Yugo closed the book at that point and set it beside him, then he grabbed a small container that had chakra paper inside of it. Sighing, he took one out and held it in front of him. Using precision granted to him by his Ijutsu training, he sent a small burst of chakra into the paper and was surprised to see it crumple up almost immediately. Setting the paper aside, Yugo put his middle finger and thumb together in order to snap. After sending a small amount of chakra into his fingertips, Yugo would snap and watch as a quick burst of Raiton sparked off his fingertips. With a faint smile, Yugo stood knowing more today than he had known the day before in the form of his elemental affinity.

Another day, another book. That's the motto Yugo tried to live by. Reading one book a day was impractical as most were fairly large. At least, the ones intelligent people read were fairly large. Taking his spot underneath the tree as he usually did, Yugo made sure he wasn't sitting on his cloak while he took the book from under his arm and sat it in his lap. It was entitled "Sensing: The In's and Out's". Nestling his back against the tree trunk and sighing in contentment, Yugo opened the book to the first page and began reading quietly to himself.

The ability to sense other shinobi is a rare trait possessed by relatively few shinobi naturally. Many shinobi must practice for years to even gain a rudimentary understanding of the process, though for the most part it's a natural talent that we don't quite understand even today. The theory postulated most often suggests that each person sheds a very infinitesimal fraction of their chakra from their tenketsu, so little that it isn't even worth measuring, and that sensor type shinobi are able to pick up on this small amount of chakra via their own released chakra. How this is done is unknown, but to learn how to sense other shinobi is a technique that even sensors must learn. More often than not, they are born with the ability to naturally suppress their chakra so that other sensors cannot detect them though this comes with the price of not being able to use any chakra consuming techniques. If one can use this ability even unconsciously, then it is a huge indicator of one being a natural born sensor."

Yugo put his finger in the book to mark his spot and thought back a bit. Not too long ago, he was approached by a man who claimed to be a sensor type shinobi. He claimed that he couldn't sense Yugo's chakra signature and asked him if he himself was a sensor, to which Yugo replied in the negative. The man had shrugged and said he doubted that, but walked away anyways. In fact, that very memory is what had prompted Yugo to even take up the book he was reading now. Checking around to make sure there were shinobi in the vicinity to try and sense, Yugo closed his eyes and thought back to the words in the book. If they were to be believed, then perhaps he needed only to try and control the chakra that was barely leaking out from his body.

He imagined himself stretching out with imaginary chakra strands emanating from his body and touching other people. He remained like this for minutes with nothing happening, until finally, a vague image of a weird color popped into his mind. A faint, orange glow was emanating from the source. Opening his eyes, Yugo looked to the location of the light and saw a shinobi belching out Katon jutsu in practice. Was... was that orange tint Katon chakra then? HAD HE JUST SENSED SOMEBODY? Excited, Yugo closed his eyes again. Reaching out, Yugo took his time finding each of the three people within his sensory range which he assumed was about 250 meters, but he couldn't be sure. Giddy with excitement for the first time in god knows how long, Yugo took the book and quickly walked back to the hospital. He needed to operate on somebody to calm his nerves, after all.

It was a breezy day out in Konohagakure today, ruffling Yugo's hair with every whisper on the wind. Today he had brought along a scroll to read instead of a book, as this scroll just went over the ins and outs of how to use the most basic of Ijutsu techniques: The Chakra Scalpel. As he found his usual place underneath the same tree and sat with his legs crossed, Yugo began to think back to his first time attempting the chakra scalpel. It had ended quite badly, with him almost cutting off the entire leg of a pig carcass in his practice session, though he had been able to form a blade on his first try was something to be commended.

As he opened the scroll fully on the ground and skipped to the middle of it, where the more advanced teaching started, Yugo's memory drifted again to his first successful surgery using the chakra scalpel.

[flashback]

"Yugo, today we have a patient for you to assist with. His arm has recently undergone several bouts of spasms recently from what we assume are highly overactive nerve endings or damaged ones." Doctor Kusarigama announced to Yugo as if he was a fully fledged doctor at the hospital. Puzzled at her announcement, Yugo stared at her blankly until she spoke again. "What we need to do with this patient is sever some nerve endings and then heal them back to their original, undeterred and uninjured state. Muscle tissue and tendons will likely be severed as well, but all of that can be healed. The patient would prefer not to have an open incision on their body, either." the doctor said. Yugo walked alongside her down the hall as she read over her papers on the clipboard she had. Looking to Yugo, she would ask him something. "Any questions?"

"Am I just watching this happen for experience?" Yugo blurted out. The doctor chuckled.

"No, Yugo, YOU are making the incision. We will do the rest, but you need to get some practice in on a real patient. Cadavers and pigs only go so far, you know." she said. Yugo's heart leaped into his throat at her words. HE was helping in a surgery? His face turned a little red from how flustered that got him, drawing the doctor's attention to him again. "Just stay calm and do as I say and you'll do fine." she said with a sideways smile.

The two of them got to the operating room a couple minutes later. After being scrubbed down and sanitized, both were permitted into the actual room. A man was laying on a table, his body strapped down with an emphasis on his right arm with was twitching under the straps. Yugo's heart was racing. "Okay Yugo, place your hand two inches to the right of his right nipple and one inch above. Yes, like that, and use the chakra scalpel. You aren't cutting skin, but you need to cut half an inch down and three inches long, no more and no less." the doctor would tell him as he slowly made his way across the directed area. The chakra scalpel glowed faintly in the well lit room, and to many people it would seem as if Yugo was simply rubbing the man's chest with no clear intent.

After cutting three inches and with the man grunting from a small amount of pain the anesthetic couldn't get rid of, Yugo finally stopped his technique and stepped back. A Hyuga stepped up and used their dojutsu to examine the cut. After giving the thumbs up, Doctor Kusarigama began the Mystical Palm technique on the man. Knowing his queue to exit, Yugo left the room and took a deep breath.
